The completion of a dissertation is prerequisite to registration to the final examination.
The topic of the dissertation may be theoretical, or, in fields where there is an opportunity for observation and experimentation (e.g. linguistics or applied linguistics), practical.
The Aims of the Dissertation:
Dissertation candidates must prove their ability to synthesise previously acquired knowledge. They must exhibit their capability to complete the initial steps of research work and apply the rules of English academic writing both in method and style.
Choice of Topic; Supervisor:
The choice of dissertation topics is restricted to the range of fields designated by the Institute. This may vary from year to year according to the decisions of the Head of Institute.
Any lecturer of the Institute may act as supervisor.
The choice of topic must be approved by the Head of Institute.
Title Designation, Consultations, Requirements for the Completion of Dissertation Seminars:
The dissertation candidate must have his/her topic approved by a supervisor of his/her choice, in writing, on the form sheet provided by the Institute designated as ’Degree (diploma) dissertation form’. Acceptance of the topic is indicated by the signature of the Head of Institute.
In the event the candidate registers for Dissertation Seminar I in the Autumn semester (September):
20 May: deadline for the submission of the completed Dissertation/Thesis form.
September: research of sources and compilation of bibliography under the guidance of the supervisor; further refinement of chosen topic; modification of Degree (diploma) dissertation form if necessary, under the signatures of the supervisor and Head of Institute.
September registration to Dissertation Seminar I
A minimum of four (one per month) consultations. At consultations, the dissertation material must be presented in writing, as it develops. Consultation sessions must be registered with the signature of the supervisor.
30 November: completion of a chapter, the detailed list of contents, and the bibliography of the dissertation.
February following year registration to Dissertation Seminar II.
A minimum of four (one per month) consultations. At consultations, the dissertation material must be presented in writing, as it develops. Consultation sessions must be registered with the signature of the supervisor.
The candidate may receive credits in Dissertation Seminar II only if s/he attends the prescribed number of consultations and submits the relevant parts of the dissertation as required by the supervisor.
30 April: deadline for the submission of the dissertation.
In the event the candidate registers for Dissertation Seminar I in the Spring semester (February):
10 December: deadline for the submission of the completed Dissertation/Thesis form.

Submission of the Dissertation:
The dissertation must be submitted to the Institute electronically (uploaded to the database).
Please, upload the final version of your thesis/dissertation as a pdf file, with the file name being your name, your Neptun code and the year of submission (last name_first name_NeptunCode_year) in all lower case letters, e.g. smith_john_XXYY00_2025.pdf. Please, make sure that the size of the file to be uploaded does not exceed 500 MB!

The inner cover must display the title of the dissertation, the name of the supervisor, the name and major of the candidate, as well as the name of the University and the Institute and the year of completion at the bottom of the page.
A declaration by the candidate (stating that the dissertation is the candidate’s own intellectual property, and about AI use) must also be enclosed.
In addition, the supervisor must declare in writing that the thesis is admissible for defense at the final examination.
Length and Language of Dissertation:
A minimum of 30/50 pages.
Only main text body pages may be counted in the volume of the dissertation, excluding title page, table of contents, bibliography, and appendices.
Font: Times New Roman; font size: 12; spacing: 1.5; margins: left 3.5 cm (to allow for binding), all other margins 2.5 cm.
The language of the dissertation is English.
Evaluation of the Dissertation; Deadline of Evaluation:
The dissertation is marked by the supervisor, based primarily on professional content.
The supervisor must issue a detailed analytical evaluation of the dissertation. The second reader also gives a mark but a detailed assessment must be enclosed only if the mark differs from that ofthe supervisor.
The Institute must send the evaluation completed and marked by the supervisor and second reader no later than a week before the final examination.
The acceptance of the dissertation is prerequisite toregistration to the final examination.
FOR ENGLISH BA STUDENTS
The completion of the major paper is prerequisite to enroling to the Dissertation consultation seminar I.

Az év szakdolgozata pályázat minden évben meghirdetésre kerül a BA szakos hallgatóink számára.

A pályázat célja, hogy emeljük a bölcsészet- és társadalomtudományi területen folyó szakmai munka tekintélyét, és minőségi teljesítményre ösztönözzük az alapképzésben részt vevő hallgatóinkat. Az év szakdolgozata pályázat elnyerése a dolgozat témavezetőjének is megbecsülést jelent. A díjat a Kar adományozza.
A díjra az adott tanévben megvédett, az adott szakterületen kiemelkedőnek minősülő munkával lehet pályázni. A díjra nappali és levelező képzési formában tanulók is pályázhatnak. A pályázathoz a záróvizsga-bizottságok és a szakterületi bizottságok ajánlása szükséges. Csak megvédett alapszakos (BA) szakdolgozat nyújtható be. A pályamunkákat felkért bírálók véleményezik és a Kar Tudományos Akkreditációs és Minőségügyi Bizottságának tagjai bírálják el.
