Call for Papers:
The U.S. has coped with several crises during its history, and it has benefited from some of these as they have proved to be formative in many ways – for example the Revolution, the Civil War and Reconstruction, the World Wars and the Great Depression, the Cold War and the Civil Rights Movement, and most currently: the Covid-19 pandemic and Russia’s war on Ukraine. Even though America has proved to be divided time and time again, facing and fighting these crises have managed to reunite the nation—as expressed by the motto e pluribus unum. The Hungarian Association for American Studies conference is planned to revolve around research into crises past and present that have divided and often also united the U.S. We invite presentations related, but not limited, to the following topics and approaches:
- American dominance and its challenges
- conspiracy theories
- crises as catalysts
- crisis in the media – fake news and post truth
- crises of democracy and governance
- crises of economy – depression, inflation, recession
- crisis in the Anthropocene
- crisis in health and healthcare
- loss of American confidence, faith, and reason?
- migration crises
- crises in literature and media
- crisis of justice
The biannual conference of HAAS seeks to explore the division and union present before, during, and after crises in the United States and their consequences in politics, society, science, the arts and the economy. We seek submissions from scholars active in various fields of American studies including literature, linguistics, history, social and cultural studies, the visual and creative arts, politics or other related disciplines.

Abstracts

Registration fees
The registration fee includes the cost of the conference folder, coffee and small snacks during the breaks and the reception. Participants are also welcome to the conference dinner on Friday evening (6 October). The cost of the conference dinner (between 7,000 and 10,000 HUF) is to be paid separately and in cash upon registration at the conference site. Further details about the cost, location and the menu will be provided in a circular at a later time.
“Early Bird” registration fee, before 1 June 2023 (bank transfer):
HAAS members: 12,000 HUF
Non-HAAS members: 15,000 HUF
Ph.D. students: 8,000 HUF
Grace period: The registration fee must be in the HAAS bank account by 3 June; otherwise regular registration rate applies.

A konferenciára magyar és angol nyelven várunk előadásokat a tértudományokban érdekelt szakemberektől, kutatóktól, oktatóktól és PhD hallgatóktól. A 2012-ben és 2013-ban rendezett konferenciáink témái a város és az ikonikus helyek voltak, 2015-ben a máshol fogalmát és tapasztalatát tervezzük körüljárni. A hódító hadjáratok, a peregrináció, a mesterlegények vándorlása, vagy akár a Grand Tour példái is mutatják, hogy a máshol szerzett tapasztalat a nyugati kultúrákban meghatározó jelentőséggel bír az emberi lét különböző vetületeiben. Konferenciánk elsődleges célja, hogy rákérdezzen a máshol jelentésére és a máshollét tapasztalatára a különböző tudományterületeken.
Lehetséges témák (melyek az irodalom, nyelvészet, történelem, kommunikáció, oktatás, földrajz, társadalomtudomány, turizmus, tájépítészet, human geography szemszögéből, illetve más, itt fel nem sorolt nézőpontból vizsgálják a máshol fogalmát):

- a máshol és itt ellentéte
- a máshollét tapasztalata, annak megértése és szerepe az ön-reflexióban
- metaforizációs és transzferfolyamatok: innen oda
- kivándorlás, elvándorlás, migráció, szórvány és identitás

- vágy- és fantáziairodalom
- galaktikus úttapasztalat: science fiction
- mentális terek bejárása
- más kultúrákkal való találkozás, ennek hatása, kultúrsokk

Az előadások érkezhetnek bármely diszciplína területéről, ezáltal is bátorítva a téma változatos megközelítésének lehetőségét. Az előadások időtartama 20 perc.

Regisztrációs díj: 7,000 Ft. A konferencia előadásainak írásos változatából válogatás jelenik meg az Angol-Amerikai Intézet kétnyelvű, lektorált TOPOS című folyóiratában.

The English and Hungarian bilingual conference brings together scholars, researchers, graduate students, and PhD students dedicated to the study of space in the arts,
humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences for the third time. The conferences of 2012 and 2013 focused on the city and iconic places; in 2015 we wish to concentrate on the concept and experience of elswhere(ness). Voyages of discovery, wars of conquest, peregrination, journeymen’s wandering, or the Grand Tour, among others, all show that experience gained elsewhere is accorded a definitive significance in multifaceted ways in western culture. The primary aim of the conference is to poblematize the concept and experience of elsewhere(ness) across various disciplines.
Possible topics (in literature, linguistics, history, communication, education, geography, social sciences, tourism, landscape architecture, human geography, or any other disciplines):
- Experiencing the elsewhere, and its role in self-reflection
- Processes of metaphorization and transfer: from here to there
- Emigration, migration, diaspora, identity
- Galactic journeys: science fiction
- Meeting with other cultures, culture shock.
Participants will have 20 minutes to present their papers.

A konferenciára magyar és angol nyelven várunk előadásokat a tértudományokban érdekelt szakemberektől. A 2012-ben rendezett konferenciánkhoz hasonlóan a 2013-as évben is emlékezetes, a tér koncepciójával összefüggő eseményekhez, jelenségekhez és évfordulókhoz társítjuk a rendezvény témáját. A legjelesebbek közül néhány:
Építészeti terek: 400 éve, 1613-ban égett le az angol reneszánsz dráma ikonikus jelképe, a Globe színház Londonban, 150 éve nyíltak meg a londoni földalatti elkészült állomásai az utazóközönség számára, az idén emlékezünk Gustave Eiffel, a 19. század leghíresebb francia építésze halálának 90. évfordulójára, és 40 évvel ezelőtt vált az egyedülálló tervezésű Sidney Operaház a város és egyben Ausztrália építészeti ikonjává.
Történelmi és társadalmi terek: 150 éve hangzott el Abraham Lincoln szónoklata a polgárháború és az Egyesült Államok történelmének fordulópontjaként is számontartott gettysburgi csata hőseinek tiszteletére, 50 éve mondta el a Lincoln Memorial lépcsőjén Martin Luther King “Van egy álmom” beszédét, szintén 50 éve, 1963-ban lőtték le egy nyitott autóban John F. Kennedy elnököt Dallasban, és 100 éve született az a Rosa Parks, aki szerint az afro-amerikai állampolgároknak is jár annyi társadalmi tér, mint a fehéreknek: nevezetesen egy ülőhely a buszon. Végül, de nem utolsó sorban, az idén ünnepeljük Robert Capa, a legendás történelmi fotós születésének 100. évfordulóját, aki az elmúlt század meghatározó konfliktusainak ikonikus dokumentációjával volt képes a térbe vésni és rögzíteni a történelmi eseményeket.
Lehetséges témák (melyek az irodalom, nyelvészet, történelem, kommunikáció, oktatás, földrajz, társadalom, turizmus, kertépítés, mezőgazdaság szemszögéből, illetve más, itt fel nem sorolt nézőpontból vizsgálják a jelentéssel és jelentőséggel bíró hely fogalmát):
- képzeletbeli ikonikus helyek
- az ikonikus helyek lokális, regionális, nemzeti, nemzeteken túli értelmezése
- történelmi helyszínek, az “akkor és most” képe és ami mögötte van
- színpad és színtér, teátralitás
- népszerű felfogások és téveszmék az ikonikus helyekről
- az ikonikus helyek retorikája a nyelvi térben
- az ikonikus helyek retorikája a tanórán
- híd a természeti és az emberalkotta tér között
- hogyan válhat a hely és emlékezet nemzetközivé, nemzetek felettivé és interaktívvá?
- az ikonikus helyek a filmen, a mozivásznon, és a mediában
- tematizált helyek, valósághűség és karikatúra
A szervezők tehát főként olyan témájú előadásokat várnak szenior kutatóktól és PhD hallgatóktól, melyek középpontjában arra a kérdésre keresik a választ, hogy miként társul a tér egy részéhez jelentés és jelentőség és milyen eszközökkel képes az adott tér megőrizni és felidézni eseményeket. Az előadások érkezhetnek a fent említett és nem említett diszciplínák területéről, bátorítva ezzel is a széleskörű elméleti megközelítést. Az előadások időtartama 20 perc.

Reading the City – Iconic Places

The bilingual conference aims to bring together scholars dedicated to the study of space in the humanities and sciences in the year that is marked by a significant number of space related anniversaries. In the field of architecture: the iconic building of English Renaissance drama, the Globe theatre, (400th anniversary of its burning down), the world's oldest subway tunnel, the London Tube (150th anniversary of first offering public service), Gustave Eiffel, master builder of late 19th-century France died 90 years ago, and it is for 40 years that the impressive design of its Opera House has been Sidney’s symbol. Memorable spaces in history include Gettysburg, the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, where Martin Luther King’s gave his “I Have a Dream” Speech (50 years ago), Dallas, where President Kennedy was assassinated in an open convertible car, and the bus, where Rosa Parks (born 100 years ago) dared claim social space for Afro-Americans. Robert Capa, the legendary war photographer, whose photographs of all the major conflicts of his troubled time remind us that history always takes place in space was also born 100 years ago.
The organizers welcome papers on any topic related to what possibilities critical thinking offers for understanding how places assume significance, become and act as memory theaters.
Possible topics (focusing at choice on any chosen perspective – literature, linguistics, history, communication, education, geography, tourism, agriculture etc.) include, but are not limited to:
- iconic places imagined, visited, responded to, commented on, created, remembered, contested
- local, regional, national, transnational understandings of iconic places
- historic sites, sights, and looking beyond
- scenery, theatricality
- the historical gaze, the visitor’s gaze, other gazes
- popular conceptions and misconceptions about iconic places
- the rhetoric of iconic places
- the rhetoric of iconic places in the classroom
- bridging the nature/culture divide
- internationalizing, transnationalizing, interactivizing place and memory
- the cinema, new media and iconic places
- themed sites, authenticity, and caricatures
The conference welcomes papers from any discipline, a variety of theoretical perspectives, and those which engage with media beyond that of the written text. A Pannon Egyetem Angol-Amerikai Intézete által először meghirdetett kétnyelvű konferencia célja, hogy lehetőséget teremtsen a tér jelentőségét a bölcsész- és társadalomtudományok diskurzusain belül vizsgáló kutatóknak az együttgondolkodásra. A konferencia rendezésének éve sem véletlen, hiszen 2012-ben emlékezünk Charles Dickens születésének 200-adik évfordulójára, az íróéra, aki amellett, hogy halhatatlanná tette a XIX. századi Londont nagyban hozzájárult a városi irodalomról és a modern városi emberről alkotott képünk megalkotásához is.
A szervezők szívesen fogadnak előadást bármely olyan témában, mely a(z elsősorban verbális) művészetek és a kritikai gondolkodás szemszögéből járja körül a városi lét kialakulásának folyamatai közepette formálódó városi kultúrák és a városi tudat problémáját.

Reading the City Conference

This one-day bilingual conference aims to bring together scholars for the first academic conference initiated by the English and American Studies Institute, University of Pannonia, Veszprém, dedicated to the study of space in the humanities in the year that marks the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens’s birth, the writer who immortalized nineteenth-century London by contributing to the invention of urban literature and of the modern urban subject.
The organizers welcome papers on any topic related to what possibilities imaginative writing and critical thinking offer for understanding how the culture of cities and urban consciousness have been shaped in the process of creating urban life.
Possible topics (focusing at choice on any chosen perspective – literature, linguistics, history, communication, education) include, but are not limited to:
- Dickens and the city
- images of London in English and non-English literatures
- cities mythologized
- collective images of the city
- urban space as a domain of culture
- the transformation of geographical space into urban space in cultural representations
