Call for Papers:
The U.S. has coped with several crises during its history, and it has benefited from some of these as they have proved to be formative in many ways – for example the Revolution, the Civil War and Reconstruction, the World Wars and the Great Depression, the Cold War and the Civil Rights Movement, and most currently: the Covid-19 pandemic and Russia’s war on Ukraine. Even though America has proved to be divided time and time again, facing and fighting these crises have managed to reunite the nation—as expressed by the motto e pluribus unum. The Hungarian Association for American Studies conference is planned to revolve around research into crises past and present that have divided and often also united the U.S. We invite presentations related, but not limited, to the following topics and approaches:
- American dominance and its challenges
- conspiracy theories
- crises as catalysts
- crisis in the media – fake news and post truth
- crises of democracy and governance
- crises of economy – depression, inflation, recession
- crisis in the Anthropocene
- crisis in health and healthcare
- loss of American confidence, faith, and reason?
- migration crises
- crises in literature and media
- crisis of justice
The biannual conference of HAAS seeks to explore the division and union present before, during, and after crises in the United States and their consequences in politics, society, science, the arts and the economy. We seek submissions from scholars active in various fields of American studies including literature, linguistics, history, social and cultural studies, the visual and creative arts, politics or other related disciplines.

Abstracts
For presentations, an abstract of around 250 words (in English) and a short bio of 80 words should be uploaded at the end of the registration form at the following link: https://forms.gle/VzP1iQjKiEumGarC6
Deadline for submission of abstracts: June 15, 2023.
Registration fees
The registration fee includes the cost of the conference folder, coffee and small snacks during the breaks and the reception. Participants are also welcome to the conference dinner on Friday evening (6 October). The cost of the conference dinner (between 7,000 and 10,000 HUF) is to be paid separately and in cash upon registration at the conference site. Further details about the cost, location and the menu will be provided in a circular at a later time.
“Early Bird” registration fee, before 1 June 2023 (bank transfer):
HAAS members: 12,000 HUF
Non-HAAS members: 15,000 HUF
Ph.D. students: 8,000 HUF
Grace period: The registration fee must be in the HAAS bank account by 3 June; otherwise regular registration rate applies.
“Regular” registration fee, after 1 June:
HAAS members: 14,000 HUF
Non-HAAS members: 18,000 HUF
Ph.D. students: 10,000 HUF
Regular registration fee transfer closes: 18 June (there is no grace period in this case)
At the conference site (cash only):
HAAS members: 15,000 HUF
Non-HAAS members: 20,000 HUF
Ph.D. students: 11,000 HUF
